How To Repair A Carbon Fiber Paddle Blade

Topic: Repairing carbon cobweb paddle?  (Read 13803 times)

I've got an axe carbon fiber paddle. There is a crack forming right where the blade goes into the shaft. Is there anyway to repair this? Any products out in that location I should be looking at?

If all you always do is all you lot've always washed, then all you'll always become is all you ever got.

I would get a fiberglass repair kit at West Marine and wrap and epoxy it.  Or maybe an auto torso supply shop might have carbon sheets, plus epoxy.

Fiberglass volition practise the job. Short carbon patches don't actually do much. Sand all the areas you want to put glass on (give yourself a large margin) then mask the areas you DON"T desire epoxy on. To keep the weight down you might apply the epoxy to the drinking glass on a piece of cardboard, scrape off the excess with a plastic spreader, and then pick up the glass and wrap it on, Us a throwaway brusah to get the glass to lay down. Don't ad extra epoxy--no mre than it takes to wet the glass. It volition just add together weight without strength. You lot probably want two layers. Permit the kickoff layer kick until information technology'southward just tacky and add the 2d layer,

Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS ane in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 eight'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Fiberglass volition do the job.  Carbon patch volition as well piece of work.  Thats why a pro repaired a crack in my carbon wheel frame with carbon, because it works just as well.  Only lay the carbon sheets in different directions, for force.

If all you e'er do is all you lot've ever done, then all you'll always become is all you lot ever got.

Ouch, that's more then just a scissure and volition need an internal dowel. And so it's a good loaner paddle.

Hope that's not normal for these paddles. I simply bought an Axe. How long have yous had this one?

Hope that's non normal for these paddles. I only bought an Axe. How long have you had this one?

I've had information technology for a twelvemonth. I'm pretty rough on equipment though.

If all you lot ever do is all you've always washed, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got.

Step 1--contact Axe and see what they will do for you lot.

Step 2--decide if yous're up to some fairly serious piece of work that will yield a somewhat weaker, somewhat heavier paddle than the 1 you lot just broke.

Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.v V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'eight", eighteen' Speedboard, etc. etc.

What Pono said, and when you get done ask yourself if you lot would trust it (if you go offshore)

that's a loftier load expanse, just I have taken shaft sections from the actress length cut off when you size the paddle and made sleeve sections to put outside the crevice...( just that looks similar  a non salvageable on...Axe might get you a new shaft for 100 or and then

As well many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

Really it'southward the ferrule inside the shaft that'due south cleaved. That means you'd take to have the bract out of the shaft and repair the ferrule, probably reinforcing it on the inside with either a carbon tube or a forest dowel. Difficult task to practice right.

Foote ten'4X34", SIC 17.five V1 hollow and an EPS 1 in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 viii'eight", eighteen' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Pretty mutual suspension point. I repaired one of mine that bankrupt at that place and one for a friend. I used a wooden dowel for both. Get (or plough) a dowel that fits snug into the shaft. Toughest function is getting the dowel into the blade straight. I fabricated a jig for my drill printing and used a long forstner bit. Epoxied the dowel into the blade and shaft and so gave information technology a double wrap of drinking glass. Worth giving it a go merely not a paddle I'd trust in critical situations...fine as a backup or lender though.

Thank you for all the feedback. I've got an email into AXE. Waiting to hear back.

If all you always do is all yous've ever done, then all yous'll always go is all y'all ever got.

Cheers for all the feedback. I've got an email into AXE. Waiting to hear back.

Not sure if y'all noticed, Axe is actually BOTE now. Let us know how they respond. I picked up ane of these last week. Great paddle! I recall mine was only $230.

This looks like a job for a pro repair guy.

I guess it helps if y'all have carbon scraps lying nearly.
The break is inside the tube?  That makes it tougher.

Typical repair: grind out the crack for a 'skife' articulation repair, fair it out, and then go again with a wrap effectually the whole thing.

Better nonetheless if the maker will take if back.  Hard to tell in a picture, just it looks like somebody stepped on it or jammed information technology in the car.  I fixed a cheapo that was just not strong enough for the duty.  I don't want to start that rumor.  I didn't see it myself.

Any repair store that has flake graphite and is willing to do information technology should make the joint stronger than ever for effectually
$ 100 or less.  Added weight negligible.  Visible repair, well yea.

West epoxy is bachelor at West Marine (not same ownership).  But, I don't use it.  I suggest TAP for marine epoxy.
They might even sell you a pocket-size bit of carbon.  Use a total weave cloth, not too heavy.

Expert luck, (yer gonna need it)
